Sakchyam at WOW Madhesh

December 16, 2019

Janakpur: Sakchyam Access to Finance programme participated in Women of the World (WOW) Madhesh held at Janaki Temple premise in Janakpur on December 6 & 7. The Sakchyam stall at the festival highlighted the programme’s approach towards Gender and Social Inclusion (GESI) and featured selected success stories of women beneficiaries of the programme.
The stall also included a variety of products from small enterprises of women members of Sakchyam’s partner Microfinance Institution (MFI) Mahila Sahayatra Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha. The products — pulses, grains, fruits and handicraft items – which came from different districts of hilly and terai regions turned out to be major attractions for the locals of Janakpur. The encouraging response of the locals at the festival indicated the availability of potential market the MFI can explore for such SME products. “I was not too confident about bringing produce from hilly areas. I thought people would not be receptive towards products they are not familiar with but I saw a completely different scenario here,” observed Uma Chaudhary from Mahila Sahayatra. The festival provided a good market linkage exercise for the organisation.
Mahila Sahayatra is one of the three MFIs providing Enterprise Development Services (EDS) in Nepal with support from Sakchyam. Under the EDS the MFI provides skill-based training and other services such as market linkage to their loan clients. Information regarding EDS and other women-specific financial products from Sakchyam partners were also disseminated through the stall.
WOW is a worldwide movement on gender equality and it celebrates the achievements of women. Organised by British Council this was the third installment of the festival in Nepal.
